This artwork depicts the 1805 encounter between the Salish people and the Lewis and Clark Expedition, including York and Sacagawea. The Salish, prepared for war, closely watched the strange party entering their territory. Tchlis-kay-mee (Three Eagles), father of Chief Victor and grandfather of Chief Charlo, left camp to scout the area, fearing enemies might be nearby to steal horses, a constant threat at the time. At a distance, he spotted about twenty men on horseback, each leading two packhorses, except the two men at the front.
The Salish made the decision not to attack after seeing Lewis lower his weapon, signaling he did not intend to fight. This piece reflects the Salish people's strength, caution, and critical role in shaping the expedition’s survival.
This piece includes the Salish word for the place where the Salish first encountered Lewis and Clark Tmsmłi ‘No Salmon/ Lolo’
