This ledger artwork honors the care and respect for the buffalo, depicting a woman in a red cowrie shell dress, a beaded bag, and beaded cuffs. She embodies the deep connection between Indigenous people and the buffalo, representing protection, nurturing, and resilience. This piece also pays tribute to Little Falcon Robes, whose efforts to bring buffalo calves back to the Flathead Reservation helped ensure the survival of the buffalo. His mother helped with raising the buffalo calf’s until they grew into a small herd of 13 buffalo. Through her legacy, Buffalo Calf Woman stands as a symbol of both the maternal spirit of the buffalo and the people who fought to sustain them for future generations.
