Original Dimensions: 14.5” x 11.5”
Year Created: 2025
This piece honors Čeče k̓ʷeʔlú (Dirty Butterfly)/ Mary Rattlesnake, a legendary Salish woman remembered for handling rattlesnakes and carrying them in her bags. Fierce and fearless, she played stickgame down by the river, where her reputation ensured that few messed with her.
I remember hearing a story from Patlik about a moment when he was 16 and suffering from severe headaches, Mary wrapped a rattlesnake around his head, and he never experienced another headache after that.
In the artwork, Čeče k̓ʷeʔlú sits proudly wearing a traditional cowrie shell dress and Salish women’s leggings, embodying her cultural identity. Beside her lies a root bag with a butterfly weave design that has a rattlesnake subtly visible, and one wrapped around her arm symbolizing her sumeš. Set against an antique Western Hemisphere map, as being a part of powerful world people and reflecting her presence in ancestral homelands she moved through with confidence and power.
Features:
Made to Order: Each print is produced to order to ensure the highest print quality. Please allow 7–14 business days for production and delivery.
Standard Frame Sizes: Printed on standard paper sizes that fit widely available ready-made frames.
Shipping Included: Shipping within the United States is included in the purchase price.

Framing Recommendation: For the best long-term protection, we recommend framing your print with UV-protective glass or acrylic to help reduce fading from sunlight. For archival display, avoid placing the glazing directly against the print.
