This artwork captures the earliest encounter between a Europeans and the Indigenous peoples of Montana in the 1790s, predating the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1805. At the center stands a fur trader with his horse, pelts draped over the saddle and a Salish couple standing nearby, surrounded by tipis, symbolizing the initial interactions between Salish and Kootenai communities and Europeans.

Encircling the scene are pictographic representations of animals highlighting the rich biodiversity of the region prior to extensive trapping. The subsequent fur trade, driven by companies like the Hudson's Bay Company, led to over-harvesting, significantly reducing populations of beavers and ermines in the area. The artwork serves as a reflection on the environmental and cultural impacts initiated by the fur trade era, marking the beginning of significant changes for the Salish, Ql̓ispé, and Kootenai peoples.
