Artwork Description:
This piece tells a true history about a Bitterroot Sèliš ancestor’s life. She’s depicted on horseback, accompanied by her dog and a travois loaded with her belongings in parfleche.
In this artwork, I tell the story of her journey: spending winters in the Bitterroot Valley with our people, then venturing to Sntmtmsqá ‘place where you rein your horse back’ (near Ovando, MT, and Clearwater areas) for the spring, summer, and fall. This route was a stop on our way to hunt buffalo and a path to Seeley Lake. Throughout her life, she embraced this journey, even as an elder. While there, she’d gather bitterroot, camas, and other native plants. She received bison and wild game from those who passed by.
This piece captures Indigenous women’s strength, resilience, and the deep ties to our Sqelixʷ homeland in that area. I believe her presence is still felt in these lands, and her story should not be lost.
