This piece depicts the Plains Indian Sign Language (PISL) gesture for otter, reflecting the otter pelt wraps traditionally worn in our hair. I chose this antique map for the piece because the small white stain dots throughout the paper resemble bubbles rising through water, echoing the otter’s aquatic world.
Plains Indian Sign Language is an active and living form of communication shared across many Native nations and is also signed alongside the Salish language.
