Seasonal gathering and hunting have sustained the Salish and Kootenai people for countless generations. Traditionally, and still today during our ceremonies, our community feasts are served in a horseshoe-shaped gathering with tule reed mats laid throughout the center.
This piece depicts many of our traditional foods and drinks, including huckleberry juice, mountain tea, and horsemint tea. Foods represented include bitterroot and serviceberry soup, dried meat and berry soup, chokecherry pemmican, tree lichen moss cake, buffalo bone marrow, and dried buffalo, moose, elk, whitetail deer, and mule deer.
Native fish include smoked salmon, bull trout, mountain whitefish, and sturgeon. Traditional plant foods shown include the bulbs of blue camas, spring beauty, wild garlic, glacier lily, yellow bells, and wild onions; the roots of arrow leaf balsamroot, bitterroot, and desert parsley; and the berries of huckleberries, serviceberries, thimbleberries, wild raspberries, and wild strawberries. This piece celebrates our community feasts and honors the continuing relationship between the Salish people and the traditional foods of our homeland.

For archival display, avoid placing the glazing directly against the print.
