Year Created:
This artwork is created on an 1894 antique Montana map using colored pencil, ink, and acrylic paint, placing Salish presence back onto the land where these teachings have always lived. At the center, a mother holds her baby with their noses touching, a moment of tenderness that reflects the earliest bond between parent and child. Both wear Salish cowrie shell dresses, honoring ancestral aesthetics and the continuity of cultural dress.
Beside them, a cradleboard rests against a lodge pole tripod, its ties loosened as if the mother has just taken her baby out after gathering huckleberries. A woven root basket filled with freshly picked berries sits at her side, while an oversized huckleberry bush rises behind them, emphasizing abundance, care, and seasonal harvest. The Salish word for stšáłq ‘huckleberry/ tiš sweet -ałq berry). is written at the top of the piece, grounding the image in language and place.
This work speaks to how culture, land, and language are inseparable from identity. Seasonal harvest knowledge is not something learned later in life, but something carried, witnessed, and felt from birth. Through intimacy, place, and practice, this piece honors how Salish teachings are passed down hand to hand, generation to generation, rooted firmly in the homelands.
